Were I to introduce a somewhat obscure Portuguese grape variety that achieves its pinnacle expression on the island of Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean where it is capable of producing one of the great fortified wines of the world, I suspect it would be rather keenly awaited to see how it went as a table wine in Australia. But this is not the fate of the unfashionable verdelho, which I suspect found a home too soon for current trends on Australian soil.
This wine from Lowe in Mudgee is a tasty rendition of the grape variety. Paw paw, green melon and green mango feature. The palate has fresh acidity and is rather gluggable. A good outcome at 10% abv.
