Stefano Lubiana Brut NV

When and why did Tasmanian sparkling wine move so far ahead of the mainland?  Vine age, intent, a slightly cooler climate, full traditional method sparkling winemaking or a bit of all them?  In the 2000s or the current decade?  Regardless of the answers, the good news is that the best Tasmanian sparkling wines now resemble Champagnes in style.  On this tasting, the wines of Stefano Luciana would be in this highest category.

Stefano Lubiana’s Brut NV is a blend of 60% chardonnay and 40% pinot noir.  Biodynamically grown, this sparkling wine has fine, persistent bubbles in the glass.  Toast, lemon and a some herbal notes feature on the nose.  The palate expresses toast and lemon characters and is supplemented by a delicate mousse, medium length and a dry finish, although not resolutely so.  A great find at $34.
