The price of Vasse Felix’s cabernet sauvignon has crept up a little to the mid $30s and it’s from the 2011 vintage. These would be valid concerns if the wine wasn’t very good (it is very good) or the 2011 vintage was poor and rain soaked in Margaret River like much of the rest of Australia (quite the opposite, it’s outstanding vintage). Vasse Felix continue to produce wines that are very enjoyable. This wine had me reflecting too whether the Margaret River is opening up a bit of a gap ahead of the field for Australia’s best cabernet sauvignon region.
The 2011 vintage has aromatics of blackcurrant, cedar, violet and a hint of chocolate. The palate sees grippy tannins, notes of cedar and blackcurrant and is tightly wound. This is an immediately and self-evidently enjoyable wine and the bottle disappeared before long.
