This is a stunning wine, and I do not recommend standing between it, and those holding an empty glass. In terms of specifics, the 1993 vintage of Penfolds’ Grange is a blend of 86% shiraz and 14% cabernet sauvignon, with fruit sourced from the Barossa Valley and Coonawarra regions in South Australia. In terms of secondary market performance, the 1993 Grange would appear to be one of the more economically priced vintages of Grange. Nonetheless, what it lacks in secondary market lustre, it makes up for in unquestionable quality.
The 1993 Grange has alluring, almost compelling, aromatics of crushed blackcurrant, black cherry and pepper. The palate is still fresh at 20 years of age, with long length (sixty seconds plus), and a balanced expression of dark plums and blackcurrants. Overall, this wine presents as fresh, complex and with effortless length and balance. Its stunning balance of fruit, effortless finish and power puts it in a league above most. Ready to drink now and over the next 10 to 15 years, this is truly a wine to be savoured.
