Punt Road is situated in the middle of the Yarra Valley, and I usually pop into their cellar door every few years because their cabernet sauvignon and shiraz single variety wines are mostly reliable and well priced.

Punt Road’s 2011 chardonnay – from a wet year in the Yarra Valley – was the only local chardonnay by the glass at a restaurant, and so I gave it a go.  It wasn’t overly impressive.  Served too cold, tinned lemon and underripe melon slowly emerged out by way of fragrance and were quite muted in their expression.  The palate seemed a little dilute, with soft length, and decidedly light handed oak work.  Some lemons, bread and a bit of tang emerged with time in the glass.  The wine opened up a bit in the glass, so it may be better than this, but for now it’s graded as a pass only.  Acceptable
