Oakvale produce a single vineyard shiraz from the Pokolbin region in the Hunter Valley. This one has a bit more going on than the typical Hunter Valley shiraz, being more structured, and seeing more attention I expect in the winery. The wine is bright, with a medium(+) intensity purple/ruby colour. The nose has evident but good quality oak, earth, garrigue, spices and a leathery character. The palate is dry, with medium(+) acidity, medium tannins (fine grained), medium body and is a slightly extractive presentation of plums, earth, leather, wood, dried herbs accompanied by reasonable length. On days two and three, the wine continued to improve. I think this is a good wine due to its complexity and drinkability and I expect that it will develop and evolve over the next 4-5 years and needs some time to fully integrate its wares.
