For those unfamiliar with the blaufrankisch grape, it is principally grown in Austria, Germany and across Central Europe.  Despite its cold continental climate origins, it is perfectly capable of producing wines that can be quite full bodied and flavoursome, even in Austria.  I was therefore excited to taste the 2010 vintage from Australia’s only blaufrankisch producer: Hahndorf Hill Winery in the Adelaide Hills.  And what an excellent wine it is.

A medium-pronounced intensity of purple in colour.  It has a complex and rich aroma of plums, apricot blossom, hazelnut chocolate, dried herbs (almost like opening a container of English breakfast tea), white pepper and some charry oak.  The palate is full bodied with long length (filling the front, back and sides), ripe tannins and savoury, peppery overtones.  A remarkable wine that has a wonderful, caressing mouthfeel.  I have no hesitation in highly recommending this wine.  94 points (extremely good)
